Course Description:
Booker Middle School offers a wide array of arts courses, many more than the average public school! Because we are a Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School, students are encouraged to audition to attend a year long class in the art discipline of their choice.
The VPA 2D/3D Visual Art program maximizes the natural talents that young artists have by teaching advanced level skill development and application of the elements and principles of art through project based activities.
Students in VPA 2D/3D Art study the Disciplines of Art:
Art History
Art Criticism
Aesthetics
and Art Production
A VERY important part of each VPA student's course work is the creation of a personal Art Criticism Sketchbook/Journal. The daily work in the Sketchbook/Journal reflects the study of the elements and principles of art as they apply to our focal art of the week, as well as thoughtful journal entries dealing with the comparison and contrasting of other works of art. Additionally, students become skilled in writing valid art criticism and judgment statements. These are extremely valuable skills that bridge all content areas as well lead to future Arts Career opportunities.
All VPA ART students participate in Gallery Exhibitions in our own "Tornado Gallery", the first gallery of its kind in Sarasota County! Students are involved in curating, installing, labeling and attending public exhibitions of their art. These exhibits are open to the public and of course, to the BMS student body.
VPA Art students also have the opportunity to attend field trips to broaden their exposure to fine art in our community. Sarasota is the home of the State Art Museum, The Ringling, as well as many other quality arts venues. We are indeed very fortunate to have such cultural advantages in Sarasota County!
